Youth vote ‘absolutely vital’

MORNINGSIDE - Resident and Patriotic Alliance youth leader, Zareef Minty (20) is excited to vote in his first South African election in May this year.

He said the closest he has come to voting would be in his student representative council at university, where he is currently studying law, and it really showed him that “each vote can change the lives of many”.

When asked who influences his vote, Minty remarked that his vote and the votes of others would be determined by the overall strength of a party. He admires bold leaders who address current issues and take action before they are asked to. He thinks the youth’s involvement in these elections is “absolutely vital”, and has noticed the younger generation’s interest in voting increase.

Minty said, “At my university, there is a growing hype for the upcoming elections with debates happening almost every single week, building up to the election date.” He believes it is his responsibility as a Patriotic Alliance youth leader to communicate the importance of voting and making his voice heard.

“Young people come with their own issues and challenges; it only makes sense that they listen to someone who can identify [with] their issues and understand them,” he added.

His friends were not planning to vote in the upcoming elections; however they have changed their mind – thanks to him.
