Seder celebrates freedom for Jewish pupils

BENMORE- Jewish pupils of Crawford Preparatory Sandton celebrated the Festival of Passover and sat together to experience a seder with their school friends.

A seder is a ritual feast shared by family and friends, who recite the history of their struggles.

The festival commemorates the freedom of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt, which enabled them to become a free and independent people. Crawford pupils read through the Haggadah, a workshop book that teaches about the Jewish people’s exile from Egypt, and what freedom means to the Jewish nation in modern society.

The national academics co-ordinator of Crawford schools, Joseph Gerassi said its institutions were “multicultural and non-denominational”. “We invite pupils to participate in learning and sharing from each other in an environment of mutual respect and understanding, while at the same time holding on to their own unique and rich cultural heritage,” said Gerassi.

At Crawford Preparatory Sandton, Jewish studies is offered as an option to those pupils who choose to take part. He believes that understanding ones own cultural and religious background in relation to that of others, is an “important element in multicultural education”.

“It recognises that multiculturalism is not about everyone being the same, but rather about understanding difference, and learning to accept people for their differences,” he added.
