M1 mudslide repairs completed
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has completed the repairs to the embankment of the southbound carriageway of the M1 near the Killarney off-ramp.
According to roads agency spokesperson, Jenny Moodley the damage was incurred when water flooded down the embankment after vandals damaged the valve of a Joburg Water pipe in Newtown Street, Killarney.
“This senseless vandalism resulted in a mudslide that spilled onto the left lane of the M1, causing hazardous conditions for road users,” said Moodley.
The roads agency’s managing director, Skhumbuzo Macozoma said the deliberate sabotage of city council property threatened the safety of road users.
“Despite JRA’s effort to provide quality roads that are accessible, safe and livable for the Johannesburg community, the rampant theft, vandalism and sabotage of road infrastructure drains the City’s budget as JRA has to constantly replace and repair damaged and stolen infrastructure,” he said.
On behalf of the roads agency, Moodley apologised to motorists for the inconvenience caused.
“We encourage members of the community to report theft and vandalism of the City’s assets to the Johannesburg Metro police or police,” she added.
Moodley urged the community to report all road service defects to the city council’s call centre number 0860 JOBURG.
