Braamfontein Spruit is a health hazard

PARKMORE - Sewage is leaking into the Braamfontein Spruit in Parkmore.

Resident Sarah van Zyl has reported the problem numerous times to Joburg Water. “I cannot begin to imagine the health hazard that is being caused down the entire length of the river,” she said. “I cannot get hold of anyone who will take responsibility for this.”

Hurlingham resident Sophia Phirippides said, “The stench is so severe for those of us living near the river, it is like we are permanently living in a toilet. It is at its most pungent from the afternoon and throughout the night, and then for a few hours in the morning it abates.

“I think that there is sewage being let into the river at the same time of day every day from somewhere. Ultimately it must be a serious health hazard in the long run,” she added.

The last time Phirippides spoke to Joburg Water they said the blockage came from the Parkmore side of the river.

Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Millicent Kabwe said, “We have checked the query and the teams have resolved the issues each time they were reported to us.”
