Lights on morning, noon and night

BRYANSTON - Residents are concerned that the streetlights on William Nicol Drive are constantly on throughout the day and the night.

Residents are worried that the City of Johannesburg is not pulling its weight in trying to reduce the use of excess electricity and saving energy.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said, “I have had a chat with the depot. It seems they are awaiting stock of a piece of equipment to get the streetlights working like they should again.

“In the interim, the lights are on in the day to allow them to be on in the night. Whilst this is not ideal, at least the lights are on for safety reasons.” He said he would continue to keep the pressure on the City of Johannesburg to deliver services that are sustainable for the residents of the city. He added that residents should continue to log streetlight and power-related failures in their areas.

Ward 90 councillor Gordon Mackay added that streetlights remained a perennial problem as aging infrastructure meant many lights did not work, or are on all day. “I have called for increased capital budgets in order to replace these lights with newer and more cost effective ones,” he said. “At present City Power lacks the budget to replace old streetlights. As such, we as the community will need to continue reporting problems and hope that City Power responds.”
