Hyde Park High has high hopes

HYDE PARK - Hyde Park High School experienced a difficult time last year, however it is excited about the year ahead.

The school’s Grade 12 English teacher Jeffrey Ostrowick was suspended for inappropriate behaviour with a pupil and barred from teaching. But according to the school’s principal Laki Vogiatzis, pupils and staff have stayed true to the Hyde Park spirit and shown resilience.

“Much of our resilience comes from the community, from the relationships that allow us to lean on each other for support when we need it,” he said. “With the support of our parents, teachers, pupils and the community we can report that we are committed to the well-being of our pupils.”

He said the school had a clear sense of purpose. “We have reflected on the past, implemented interventions and are looking forward to the future.”

The school does not tolerate any unlawful or disruptive behaviour, including any form of bullying on school grounds or in school-related activities. The school councillor addresses matters such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse and the dangers of social media with pupils.

“We promptly investigate all reports and complaints in order to take action to end that behaviour and restore a sense of safety,” said Vogiatzis. “We support this commitment in all aspects of our school community, including curricula, instructional programmes, staff development, extracurricular activities and parent involvement.”
