Apartheid exhibition education programme begins

NEWTOWN - The organisers of photographic exhibition The Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life, announced a free educational programme.

The programme designed for pupils and working-class community groups, will be available till the end of June, when the exhibition closes.

Publicist Lesley Perkes said the venue Museum Africa, had experienced a record number of visitors since the show opened.

“The free [guided tours] around the mega-exhibition are two hours long and are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” she said.

The exhibition’s education programme director, Melissa Goba, explained that “There’s a major demand and many schools are bringing groups already. We want to make sure we facilitate the best possible guidance around the show, especially because of its scale and complexity, its significance at this time and its emotional impact.”

She added that schools could book guides for their pupils and for teachers which further increases the capacity to offer in-depth explorations of the exhibition.

The exhibition presents an encyclopedic view of apartheid and photographic practice and also represents the culmination of more than a decade of research supported by New York’s International Centre of Photography, which organised the exhibition.

Curated by Okwui Enwezor with Rory Bester, the exhibition features the work of over 70 South African photographers and artists and includes more than 800 images, 27 films and a book.

Groups of domestic and international tourists can also make use of the guides on Tuesday and Thursdays.

“Many people who see the [exhibition] are coming back again because it is impossible to appreciate [it] without more time, knowledge and contemplation,” said Goba.

“People who don’t have too much time but would like a substantial experience are welcome to contact us to book [tours].”
