Petrol price to rise a midnight

JOBURG - The petrol price will increase once again on 2 April while the price of diesel would decrease for the first time in months.

As of midnight the price of 93 octane and 95 octane petrol would increase by five cents and seven cents a litre respectively in Gauteng.

The different prices for 93 and 95 octanes were informed by cost of production, which was adjusted quarterly, and by local and international factors, energy minister Dikobe Ben Martins said.

Meanwhile, the price of diesel with 0,05 percent sulphur content will decrease by 8.8 cents a litre and 7.8 cents a litre for diesel with 0,005 percent sulphur content.

The price of illuminating paraffin will decrease by between 34.5 and 49 cents a litre, while maximum retail price for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will decrease by 22 cents a kilogram.

“The average international product prices of petrol increased whilst diesel and illuminating paraffin decreased during the period under review,” said Martins. “The strengthening of the rand against the US dollar decreased the contribution to the basic fuels price on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 18.46 c/l, 19.03 c/l and 18.63 c/l respectively.

“The decrease in the price of illuminating paraffin and LPG will benefit households that use these products, especially as winter approaches.”

However, he said the prices would be different in other fuel pricing zones.

“The prices will be different due to the adjustment to the transportation costs.”

For the first time, motorists’ pockets were being eased after Martins scrapped the inland fuel transport levy.

This move spared consumers from paying a further three cents a litre for petroleum products.

The inland transport recovery system levy was included in the fuel price to recover the cost of transporting petroleum products by alternative modes of transport, other than the pipeline from Durban to inland markets.
