Joss Stone is not the white Aretha Franklin

SANDTON - British soul superstar Joss Stone attended a press conference at The Maslow in Sandton on 1 April.

This before her live performance at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena on 2 April. Stone is thrilled to be in South Africa for the second time. “Going to different countries is always so much fun for me,” she said.

Stone believes her second album Mind, body and soul is the album that launched her career. “When I was making my first album I was still learning,” she explained. “I was basically still being taught. I was a student and I was just lucky to be a part of it. In my second album that is where I made the music I wanted to make.”

When she was a youngster she asked for an Aretha Franklin CD for Christmas while her peers listened to Britney Spears and boy bands. Franklin is popularly known as the queen of soul music with songs such as Respect, Natural woman and I never loved a man. Stone said she would even request that at school concerts they perform Franklin’s songs.

Throughout her career she has been likened to Franklin because of her powerful voice and her love for soul music. When she was described as the young Franklin at the conference she disputed this. “Please, Lord please do not compare me to her,” she said. “One, I cannot sing like her at all. Not even a tiny bit. That’s just the truth. I just like to sing songs that sound soulful,” said Stone.
