Students making headway

HYDE PARK- Student massage therapists volunteered their skills in support of World Head Injury Awareness Day on 20 March at Headway Gauteng.

Headway is a registered welfare organisation dedicated to offering various support programmes to survivors of brain injury and their families.

The students and staff of the Madge Wallace International College of Skincare & Therapy volunteered their time to people who have suffered brain injuries.

According to senior lecturer, Melissa Baird the college started community service at Headway last year. She said World Head Injury Day was an opportunity to give back to the volunteers of Headway.

“We wanted to give people something special, the power of touch,” said Baird.

Therapy manager Christine Buchanan said most people recovering from brain injuries never received touch therapy.

“They live from day-to-day, so they get touched when they dressed, when they put in their wheelchair and put on the loo, but don’t get touched for the sake of touch,” said Buchanan. “Therapeutic touch is a completely new experience for people with head injuries.”

Buchanan said the massage therapists were also able to give therapy to the caregivers. “They are care giving all the time, so who looks after the caregiver. For them to have this kind of treatment is just the best,” she added.

Students of the college do community service at Headway every Friday.
