Honouring a humanitarian on her birthday

SANDTON - The City of Johannesburg’s Social Development Department and Radisson Blu Hotel hosted a 103rd birthday party for Eldorado Park resident Rozetta Alberto in Sandton.

Alberto is known to members of her community as Aunt Mersie. Her daughter, Suzan Probert (60) said the day was a dream come true because she had always dreamt of her mother being celebrated for all the good she had done. Alberto is well known in her community of Eldorado Park where she was part of the Mothers Against Drugs Association in Klipspruit and the Eldorado Park Local Drugs Committee in 2008.

She celebrated her special day at the hotel where she had a lunch with her family. After the lunch Alberto said, “I’m very happy and I really enjoyed my meal. I ate a lot of food today.”

Probert said, “It’s the first time that my mother has received this kind of appreciation and I never thought it would happen. I’m so happy for her.”

Councillor Nonceba Molwele, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg also attended the event. “The City of Johannesburg is honoured to have a senior citizen like her,” said Molwele. “We wanted to thank her for the role she played in fighting drug abuse. She was very active in community organisations and this is to show our appreciation for her service to the people.”
