Post office users irate

SANDTON - The Sandton City Post Office closed it doors, apparently without prior notification to its customers.

Sandton residents Peter and Mellony Maxwell have had their Sandton post box since 1973 and were anxious about where their mail would be sent.

According to the Maxwells, there was “no mention” about where people could collect their post or where their post boxes had moved to.

When they visited the management offices at the shopping centre, they were told that the post boxes would be moved into the parking area on Level 3, off Sandton Drive.

“The Sandton branch is a major post office and the decision to renovate it must have been in the planning stages for quite some time,” said Peter. Melanie added, “We believe their notices should have made it clear that a temporary site was being set up.”

Another customer, Dulcie Braude said, “They [the post office] often send reminders to us. Why could they not put mail in our post boxes to notify us they were closing? They have all our contacts, there is no excuse.”

In response, group executive of the South African Post Office Janras Kotsi said, “We apologise to all our customers for this unavoidable inconvenience and assure customers that we have made alternative measures to ensure that they experience as little service interruption as possible.

“We have undertaken to deliver private bags to the physical addresses of the private bag renters, including the delivery of all post box owners’ mail to their street addresses on request, until the move of the Sandton post boxes to the temporary area on Level 3 parking is complete.”

It is envisaged that the new Sandton City Post Office branch will be in operation in October. The temporary post office will be completed in three weeks and will provide full services, including post boxes.
