Bad reception for cellphone tower

STRATHAVON residents are concerned about the possible construction of a cellphone tower between Helen Street and Linden Road.

According to resident Daniella Getz, the tower will be erected between houses and residential estates and will negatively impact on the surrounding community.

“Both local and international studies have conclusively demonstrated that close proximity to a cellphone tower negatively impacts on the health of surrounding residents,” said Getz. “Cellphone towers have been associated with cancer amongst other severe illnesses.”

She added that the tower would negatively impact on the property values of the surrounding residences and would be an eyesore.

“I urge the residents of Strathavon to stand together and to oppose MTN to protect our health and our property values,” she added.

Councillor Andrew Stewart of Ward 91 is aware of MTN’s intentions, and is waiting for the residents to get back to him with their concerns.

“I need a general consensus before I respond. We were given 30 days to object,” said Stewart.

MTN had not responded at the time of going to press.
