Pikitup introduces recycling in suburbs

They believe people can rethink the way they see waste and understand what materials can be used again.

Pikitup sees waste as a valuable resource, and their system puts valuable materials back into the manufacturing stream which helps save on raw materials, as well as creating job opportunities.

Pikitup encourages residents to recycle as it reduces pollution, helps save space in landfill sites and most importantly, saves the environment. By re-using, residents are helping to protect natural resources, will cut down the volume of waste produced and be challenged to come up with creative ideas to recycle waste.

Recycling also reduces the effects of global warming and helps protect the environment. It is everyone’s duty and responsibility to try to be more conscious of their activities and the negative impact it has on the environment.

Waste is produced when people throw away wrappers, old newspapers, food and other items in one dustbin. Industrial waste is generated by the use of washing powder, batteries, paint and motor cars.

Recycling involves separating certain useful or re-usable waste and putting them into special, marked recyclable bags and bins supplied by various organisations.

This used material is then processed into new products which prevent usable waste ending up in landfill sites. It also helps reduce the consumption of raw material, reduces energy usage, as well as air and water pollution.

Every suburb and resident has the opportunity to recycle. Different bags are placed at each house to separate the different materials. Normal household waste and food go into black bin bags. Rinsed uncontaminated plastic, glass, tetra packs, polystyrene cartons and tins go into clear bags. Paper, newspaper, magazines and cardboard are put into the special bags provided.

Residents can also make their own compost from garden waste and other organic waste such as vegetable peels and leftover fruit. Suburbs in Sandton have different collection days and differ from the normal Pikitup times for rubbish.
