Refuse removal a problem in Kelvin

KELVIN - Resident Patrick Ganesan was shocked to find that for two weeks his garbage had not been collected outside of his home in Kelvin.

He said, “There is decay of refuse inside the bins and an increase in the number of rodents.” Ganesan expressed that the situation posed a health threat for him and his neighbours. “We are also being billed for services not rendered,” he added. “In fact, the service is so inconsistent that there is no fixed day and time that the refuse is collected.”

Ganesan said Pikitup should find a way to secure residents’ bins. He added, “Residents should not have to pay for a replacement bin that cannot be secured because the bins are only stolen due to the inconsistency of Pikitup’s service days.” He added that because bins were left unattended for a long time, it posed a security threat. “This could also impact on information security of discarded mail,” explained Ganesan.

Pansy Oyedele, Pikitup communications manager said, “We would like to apologise to Ganesan and all other residents in Kelvin for the inconvenience caused. We confirm that in the Kelvin area refuse collections are scheduled on Fridays. We undertake to communicate timeously in the future should we foresee any kind of service delivery interruptions.”

Oyedele added that residents were advised to put out their refuse by 7am on collection days, and if unforeseen delays arise resulting in bins not being collected by 8pm on the day of collection, the bins should be taken back into the yard. “The bins can be taken out the following day, as the teams will return to complete their rounds,” explained Oyedele.
