Felix the survivor

BRYANSTON - Felix the owl has cheated death twice: a near drowning incident as well as escaping the jaws of a Labrador.

Kathy Mukheibir from Bryanston and her colleagues first found the baby owl inside a pool. She said, “He was soaked to the bone and lifeless. We wrapped him in a towel and called Brendon from the Owl Rescue Centre who said to keep him warm and in a safe place.”

Mukheibir and her colleagues watched the six-week-old spotted eagle owl come alive. “Like a miracle in front of our eyes, we had him in a basket next to my desk with warm bean bags and as the minutes went by after we rescued him from the pool, he started to regain his strength. He started to hiss and click when anybody went near him. Being cheeky was the next phase; he was paddling around my office as if he owned the place,” said Mukheibir.

Survivor… Kathy Mukheibir and Felix, the baby owl that was rescued from a pool in Bryanston – and a Labrador’s mouth.

She said after Felix was released to the garden so that his parents could see him, he disappeared into the undergrowth. Mukheibir said, “There was no sign of him until the following night. We found our golden Labrador with him in her mouth. Luckily he was still alive but short of a few tail and wing feathers. With a few feathers short we have been a bit concerned that Felix will take longer to get flying.”

Mukheibir said Felix has been recovering well and getting more playful by the day.
