Apply caution on William Nicol Drive

TWO accidents occurred in one week on William Nicol Drive due to an alleged dangerous intersection.

However, Johannesburg Roads Agency’s Bertha Peters-Scheepers maintained that from their side “everything was in perfect working condition”.

Two police vans collided with a black Toyota opposite Rosebank Union Church on the corner of William Nicol Drive and St Andrews Road on 8 January. On 9 January, fifteen people were injured when a taxi overturned on the corners of William Nicol and Sandton drives.

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter said residents and motorists in the area have complained about the traffic lights on William Nicol Drive and the roads agency had addressed the complaints.

Ward 90 councillor Gordon Mackay added, “The area has become a very high accident zone with six major accidents at the end of last year. The roads agency has apparently assessed the intersection and made recommendations in a report to improve safety. The report was supposed to be sent to me and the Hurlingham Resident’s Association and changes were supposed to be made to the intersection. However, as of yet I have not received the report and the proposed changes to the intersection have not been implemented.”

The two accidents caused damage to a number of vehicles and traffic lights. People involved in the accidents were also injured. ER24 communications manager Werner Vermaak said motorists must take extreme care when approaching the William Nicol Drive intersections.

The roads agency encourages residents to report road issues to 0860 562 874, hotline@jra.org.za, or Twitter @MyJra.
