Employees help fill up the blood bank

SANDTON - Cell C staff in Buccleuch donated blood on 14 January in a bid to help replenish blood reserves following the festive season.

The blood drive formed part of the company’s Believe campaign where regional departments nationwide competed to donate the most blood.

Celebrities and key industry players such as former Miss South Africa, Bokang Montjane; chief executive officer from EP Kings Rugby, Charl Crouse and the Sharks rugby team attended the drives to show their support for the initiative.

Cell C’s executive head of marketing, Doug Mattheus said, “The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) needs to collect 3 000 units of blood a day to meet the country’s demand for blood transfusions. Stocks often run low during the festive season because of lower collections while people are on holiday, and also increased traffic to casualty wards at hospitals around the country.”

He said SANBS provides an essential service in South Africa and is rated among the best in the world in the provision of blood and blood products. He added that SANBS also provides research and training.

“We encouraged our staff to donate blood so that they can help save lives. Of the over 50 million South Africans, less than 1 percent donate blood every year. We would like to appeal to the all South Africans to follow in Cell C’s footsteps and donate blood to help save the lives of millions of South Africans in need of a transfusion,” said Mattheus.
