Disabled burn wheelchair outside e-toll office

RIVONIA - A group of wheelchair-bound residents protested outside of the Rivonia Road e-toll offices.

The group reportedly burnt a wheelchair and wielded banners accusing the South African National Roads Agency of “paralysing” them.

The protest was conducted by members of the QuadPara Association of South Africa. The association’s chief executive Ari Seirlis was reported saying that government and the roads agency had promised the disabled an exemption, but never implemented this promise as legislation.

The group arrived at the offices on 3 December to apply for their exemption, but were reportedly turned away.

Phone calls to the QuadPara Association of South Africa went unanswered on 4 December.

The South African National Roads Agency declined to comment telephonically and requested questions in writing. This has been submitted and an update will follow as soon as more information is available.
