Burst water pipe causes traffic chaos

SANDTON - Motorists travelling on Jan Smuts Avenue near Bompas Road, Dunkeld were brought to halt when a pipe along the road burst during morning traffic on December 4.

Thousands of litres of water gushed heavily from the pipe earlier that morning forcing some motorists to find alternate routes. One of the lanes on the road had been closed due to road construction.

The same pipe burst on 30 November but according to Joburg Water spokesperson, Millicent Kabwe, it was a different section of the pipe that burst.

Kabwe said, “We are still investigating the cause of the burst and the pipe is being repaired. We are not going to have road closures while we are repairing the pipe.”

She encouraged the public to report burst pipes to the relevant authority when they see them.

“We only became aware of this burst pipe on the radio this morning, but there were motorists driving past it,” she explained.

In May this year it was announced the City of Johannesburg lost 39 percent of Gauteng’s water in the 2011/2012 financial year.
