Guy Buttery launches live album.

SONGWRITER Guy Buttery launched his latest album, Live in KwaZulu at the Brazen Head Library in Strathavon.

Buttery has returned from a world tour to promote his new album in South Africa and played five sets in Johannesburg.

Michael Plaxton-Harrison of Some Grow Young opened for Buttery and played a solo set which focused on looping guitar melodies.

Live in KwaZulu is a recording of Buttery’s masterworks played to a live audience, and was recorded over two nights. The new live album showcases Buttery’s further explorations in instrumentation and innovative ‘soundscapes’, and includes musical partner, Nibs van der Spuy on two of the 11 tracks. For many years the public have asked Buttery to make a live album and he decided to make the project come alive this year.

“In many ways, I have been afraid. In a live environment there is no way to get it ‘just right’,” said Guy.

“When you make music in front of an audience, there is energy, certain dynamics, a feel, a collective experience. This is not the studio. It is real.”

Buttery is promoting his new album throughout South Africa, UK, USA and Canada.
