A Prince of bowlers

PRINCE Neulonde, a groundsman at Bryanston Sports Club has been selected as the first black Protea lawn bowler.

He will represent South Africa against Namibia at Wingate Park in Pretoria. Neulonde has worked at the club for seven years and helps tend to the grounds with his father Benneth, the resident greenkeeper.

Neulonde watched his father play bowls at the sports club and wanted to get involved. He started playing bowls four years ago under the mentorship of Jac de Villiers who has coached the sport for 22 years. De Villiers is a provincial coach and runs a clinic for bowlers every Saturday morning where new bowlers can learn the skills of the game and existing bowlers can work on their weaknesses.

Neulonde practises for two hours a day and really enjoys the pace of the sport. Winning the club open singles title and provincial competitions made the national selectors take note of his skills.

Those who would like to follow in Neulonde’s footsteps can attend a bowls awareness day on 17 November at the club. There will be barefoot bowls, face painting and a treasure hunt will be organised for the children. Picnic spots will be available around the club.
