Mathematicians in the making

FOUR schools took part in the finals of this year's inter-schools' Computer Aided Mathematics Instruction competition.

St Davids Marist Inanda, Bryanston Parallel Medium School, Rivonia Primary School and Bryanston Primary School were part of the Gauteng competition which saw a total of 15 schools participating in the competition.

“The objective of the competition is to encourage learners to improve their core mathematics skills. Since January we conducted preliminary intra-school competitions around Gauteng with the objective of encouraging learners to practise their core skills in preparation for the inter-school competition,” said Sharon Cross, CEO of The Foundation for Excellent Learning, the official distributor for the Computer Aided Mathematics Instruction . “Each participating school entered a learner from each grade which saw 105 children taking part in the final,” she added.

The winners of the Foundation Phase (Grade 1 to Grade 3) and the Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to Grade 7) each won a Computer Aided Mathematics Instruction system. Results were based on the individual’s Performance Index Scores which is a combination of speed and accuracy.

“We are thrilled with the schools’ participation and are excited about next year’s competition, which is bound to see the number of participating schools increase in leaps and bounds,” said Cross. “It is crucial that at an early age learners realise that maths is an extremely important subject,” added Cross. “Without a strong foundation, learners will find it difficult to achieve good marks for Further Education and Training (FET) mathematics for matric, which is a ‘gateway’ subject to most degrees and careers. Learning maths with Computer Aided Mathematics Instruction makes maths fun and develops a positive attitude towards this very important subject.”
