Flights resume at OR Tambo

JOBURG - While power cable is yet to be restored at OR Tambo International Airport, airlines are now able to uplift fuel out of the airport.

The damage to the cable due to Sunday morning’s attempted cable theft had affected the fuel pipeline’s ability to transmit fuel to aircraft.

Both domestic and international flights were affected resulting in majority of the airlines being delayed.

“I wish to confirm that normal fuelling operations have resumed after the airport had been operating at significantly reduced fuelling capacity for about six hours,” airport spokesperson Unathi Batyashe-Fillis.

“Shortly before 4pm on Sunday, our technicians implemented a temporary solution to re-activate services. The fuel pumps are now able to transmit fuel for uplift into aircrafts,” she said.

“We wish to express our regret at this incident, which has inconvenienced our passengers and airline partners. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for revised times and relevant information.

In the meantime, Airports Company South Africa will together with its partners continue to institute preventative and corrective measures to ensure such incidences remain top priority given the impact.”

Police are investigating the matter.
