Municipal workers strike looms

MEMBERS of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) could down tools after talks with the employer about several contagious issues collapsed.

Samwu and the SA Local Government Association have been in talks during the last few days.

“The talks have unfortunately collapsed, due to the intransigence of the employer body,” Samwu said in a statement.

“We had tried in vain in to break the deadlock in negotiations on the main collective agreement, disciplinary code, increase in home owners allowance and bringing municipal owned entities under the scope of the South African Local Government Bargaining Council, as per the entities request and subsequent settlement agreement of a demarcation dispute.”

“The employers refusal to discuss anything with a monetary value, led to the collapse of the negotiations.”

The union added it would urgently consult with its members on the most appropriate way forward.
