This clean-up is for the birds

ST STITHIANS College pupils initiated a clean-up of the William Nicol Bird Sanctuary in Sandton.

They brought their family and friends to assist. The bird sanctuary is the property of the Johannesburg Zoo and City Parks.

Operations director at the school, Rene Swart said, “We took the initiative to help the Johannesburg Zoo and City Parks look after the place. We want the land to be a part of the school so that pupils can learn about the birds and the environment as part of their education.”

Sponsors have assisted the school and secured a monthly salary for a guide to work at the bird sanctuary. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from sponsors,” said Swart. “We’ve even gone as far as creating a job for someone.”

During the clean-up, 100 trees were planted, weeds were rooted out and rubbish was removed. Sponsors also provided bins, palisade boundary fencing, equipment and food for everyone involved.
