Summit to discuss Information Technology

Gauteng government services will soon be accessible through smartphones and tablets.

This will be revealed at the Gauteng Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Summit to be held on 3 October at the RandPark Fairway Hotel in Randburg.

The event provides a platform for government and the ICT industry to engage on a broad roadmap for the development, implementation and maintenance of baseline ICT infrastructure and mobility in the province.

The Department of Finance in the province said core elements of the discussion themes would include mobile enterprise platforms, mobile applications and content management, as well as mobile devices and operating systems.

Finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe said the emergence of new ICT had not only revolutionised the way business was conducted, but also transformed the delivery mechanism of government services.

“Service delivery is of paramount importance to us, and technology is giving us ways to offer services smarter and quicker to citizens. Mobile devices are taking the world by storm and we need to take advantage of this,” he said.

Other issues to be discussed include IT security, productivity, mobile application management, mobile platform management and the challenges of the ‘bring your

own device (BYOD)’ phenomenon. This means that people are able to access privileged company information and applications with their own mobile devices.

Nkomfe said the summit would assist government to develop tangible targets to improve service delivery.
