Ballyclare water leak continues to frustrate

There is water continually running down Balleyclare Drive in Bryanston causing damage to cars and interference to traffic.

More than a year’s worth of inquiries and complaints have been received by the council and repairs have not been seen to.

A resident of Balleyclare Drive, Hillary Keizan, will not give up in getting this problem fixed. “I do not complain and do nothing. I have a year of references to prove my persistence,” said Keizan.

The water requires a high level of caution for drivers on the corners of Ballina Road, Saint Audley Road and Balleyclare Drive. The water is damaging the road’s infrastructure and causing potholes. Councillor Vincent Earp of ward 103 said the potholes are being fixed on a weekly basis, and that the sheen from the water makes it hard for drivers to see the potholes in front of them.

More than half of the road is damaged, and motorists and buses face on-coming traffic to avoid damage to their tyres.

According to Earp, there is not enough space for two cars to pass and if not fixed soon there is going to be a collision.

The cause of the running water has not been established but that is not the only problem on Balleyclare Drive.

The bridge is broken and there are no markings on the road. “Plastic heavy-duty barriers were placed on the bridge to avoid accidents,” said Keizan. “After several cars crashed into the plastic, they put up concrete barriers.”

On 4 September the Johannesburg Roads Agency told Earp they would repair the bridge, but nothing has happened.

“The residents of Bryanston pay high rates and taxes,” he said. “All they are asking is for the area to be maintained.”
