THE launch event for the Jerusalem Marathon Unity Challenge was held on Tuesday evening at 20 West executive apartments and hotels.

Hosted by ORT SA, a non-profit educational organisation, the South African Zionist Federation (SAZF) and the Jewish leadership programme Mizrachi SA; establishments welcomed the team to the cause.

The meeting informed the team about the details of the trip and the route of the marathon in Jerusalem, Israel lead fundraiser of ORT SA Nicci Raz has been involved in the unity challenge for four years.

After meeting nine times Comrades winner Bruce Fordyce, Raz asked the athlete to join the team in Jerusalem in March next year.

According to Fordyce, he cannot wait to go to Israel for an adventure. His plan is to develop an individual training programme for the runners involved.

Ben Swartz of SAZF greeted the group reminding participants of the importance the training schedule is.

“I am privileged to be drawn into the marathon by Nicci Raz. I have the opportunity to run on the cobblestones of Jerusalem and glad to be part of this vision,” said Swartz.

Rabbi Ramon Widmonte of Mizrachi SA reflected on the unity aspect of the challenge. He said three major faiths were centred in Israel and diverse communities are invited to join the marathon.

“It is a tremendous experience coming together with thousands of people from across the world. I look forward to the beautiful harmonies of different accents. The team will be running through 3 000 years of history, physicality and spirituality,” said Widmonte.

Raz has participated in marathons in London, New York, Paris, and next is Jerusalem.

“I enjoy the experience of running for a cause and being part of the magic. Training as a group is an amazing experience,” said Raz.

The challenge is open to individuals who are willing to join the cause and run to raise money. 50 percent of the funds are allocated to a runner’s charity of choice.

The marathon takes place on 21 March 2014 and individuals can sign up for 10, 21 or 24 kilometres.
