Bengu’s exhibition explores transformation

Bongi Bengu is a South African-born artist who left the country to study in Switzerland and Swaziland when her family went into political exile.

She graduated in 1993 with a BA in Fine Arts cum laude from Mount Vernon College in Washington D.C, and returned to South Africa to complete her masters at Michaelis School of Fine Art, at the University of Cape Town.

Welcome to Bongism is an exhibition that will serve as a re-launch into the art world after a four-year hiatus. According to Bengu, ‘Bongism’ is a way of thinking; a philosophy with the purpose of helping transform people and encouraging them to discover who they are.

Her work deals with healing through visual art, dance and movement; documenting and researching the visual arts; teaching art to school children and curating exhibitions.

Bengu’s focus for the exhibition concentrates on her growth as an artist who has previously worked with charcoal and pastel drawings and is now moving onto semi-abstract, mixed media works.

The exhibition opens on 19 September and will be held at Art Afrique Gallery in Sandton at 6 pm.
