Power saboteurs to face the law

JOBURG - MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Service Matshidiso Mfikoe has condemned recent actions of 'sabotage' by striking City Power employees.

This after striking employees allegedly and deliberately caused a power outage in some parts of Johannesburg, in defiance of the employers’ introduction of new working shifts.

“We need to praise courageous initiatives from public institutions and encourage a high-performance culture in the public sector. It is unacceptable for senior executives to be persecuted for driving a high-performance agenda. Those found guilty of these criminal activities will face the full might of the South African law,” said Mfikoe.

She said the city supported the implementation of efficiencies within City Power, to meet service delivery objectives, contribute towards the municipality’s Growth and Development Strategy objectives, adding, “we will support any initiatives that will uproot corruption and inefficiencies.”

City Power board chairperson, Reverend Frank Chikane said the shift model implementation was necessary to address employee safety and to comply with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, including ensuring efficient service delivery.

“We will ensure that the MD and his management team receive the necessary support. While we respect our employee’s right to withhold their labour following the lawful processes, interfering or sabotaging the network is a criminal act that will not be tolerated,” he added.
