City opens criminal case against system hacker

The City of Joburg has opened a case against culprits that hacked their IT system.

The case was opened at the Hillbrow Police Station in Johannesburg, following a forensic investigation by the city council and its IT partner.

“We would like to reassure all residents that the necessary legal and technical steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in future and that our residents’ confidential information is safe and secure,” said spokesperson Gabu Tugwana.

He said the city council would keep residents informed on the progress of the case on a regular basis, as well as on the actions that have been taken as part of the investigation.

“Criminal acts of this nature will not go unpunished and the City intends to send out a strong message that a deliberate and malicious breach of this nature will not be tolerated,” said Tugwana.

Tugwana was unable to name the culprits responsible for the act, saying the matter was in the hands of the police.
