Sandton City takes construction workers to court

Sandton City Centre Management confirmed that on 26 August a group of construction workers entered the Atrium of Sandton City Shopping Centre with the intention of striking as part of the nationwide construction workers' strike.

All strikers subsequently left the premises and the centre continued to trade as normal.

As soon as the management became aware of the strike action taking place, the relevant security measures were put into place and all tenants were notified. No injuries were reported. “The safety and security of customers and tenants is of utmost importance to Sandton City Centre Management and this situation will be monitored closely,” said Sharon Swain, property portfolio manager of Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square.

Online sources reported that an interdict had been granted by the South Gauteng High Court to prevent striking construction workers from entering the mall.

On the same day, two construction workers were injured during a protest in the Sandton area.
