Speeding father clocks 201km/h

RIVONIA - A man (68) was arrested for clocking 201km/h in his Mercedes Benz on the N1 highway near the Rivonia offramp on the evening of 27 July.

News24 reported that he was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 30 July for this alleged speed limit infringement.

According to Metro Police chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the motorist was with his wife and child as he sped along the highway some 80km/h over the speed limit.

In separate incidents, a biker was arrested for reaching a speed of 202km/h on the R21 (Albertinah Sisulu Freeway) near Benoni, and 10 other drivers were arrested for speeds ranging between 163 and 186km/h on the same stretch of freeway.

The Arrive Alive website warns motorists of speeding, giving the following reasons:

  •  Speed reduces the amount of time needed to avoid a crash by increasing the time needed to stop the vehicle.
  • Speed extends the distance a vehicle travels when the driver reacts to a dangerous situation.
  •  Speed reduces the ability of the driver to steer safely around curves or objects on the road.
  •  Speed increases the likelihood of crashing.
  •  Speed increases the severity of a crash once it occurs.
