Big safety lessons for little ones

PARKMORE - A talking gun, a ninja turtle, and a balloon poodle on a balloon leash were among the inventive devices used to engage children at a safety and security talk given at Field and Study Montessori school in Parkmore on 15 July.

The talk was given by an exuberant Mr. ADT (Darin Mc Dowall), and the little ones squealed and laughed at their entertaining teacher, with the exception of two smaller children, who were overwhelmed by the colourful display of characters and had to be escorted out of the room in tears.

Mc Dowall used his talents as a ventriloquist to enhance the show, even managing to get a comical gun to engage the children in conversation.

Mr. ADT is the security company’s mascot character, representing it at schools throughout the country.

The 45-minute show is both educational and entertaining, and focuses on safety in the home. Poisons, guns, knives, fire dangers, dogs and ‘baddies’ are some of the topics covered.

“Unfortunately, in South Africa there is no escape from conversations about crime,” said Clive Humphrey, managing director of ADT Central. “Children are never too young to be educated and made aware, in a non-threatening manner, of the dangers that exist in our society,” he added.

The Mr. ADT shows take place at local pre- and primary schools and are hosted free of charge by ADT.
