The Morningside Pit Stop

The suburb of Morningside, although not officially established until the 1950s, was a well-known area for farming much like the rest of Sandton. Dirt roads separated the farming land.

Morningside was born when the old Witswatersrand farm, Zandfontein, was named after a small town in Scotland. Many of the suburbs in the area were named after UK towns due to the ancestry of those who settled in the area.

With many hectares of farming land, the Heritage Portal notes that the area was most well-known for its Outspan Park. The park was mainly used as a resting stop for travellers and allowed people to get in a good night’s rest while their horses grazed in the field.

Fast forward 50 years and Morningside had become one of the most affluent residential areas in Sandton. The area also boasts businesses, hospitals, schools and shopping centres. Morningside Rotary Club, established some 30 years ago has also made an important contribution to the suburb’s history.
