Sandton Run Walk for Life does some challenges

SANDTON – The Sandton Run Walk for Life coach has along with members of the fitness group, completed two challenges since those early days of the lockdown in April.

For many, running 56km in the garden would be enough exercise for the whole lockdown, but it was not so for Ethiene Marais.

The Sandton Run Walk for Life coach has along with members of the fitness group, completed two challenges since those early days of the lockdown in April. The first challenge was called the out-and-about challenge and featured many members of the Sandton Run Walk for Life branch. Together, they clocked an accumulated distance of 150km on the streets in one morning on 2 May. No treadmills were allowed, but ‘fresh air freedom fun’ was a must, Marais said.

“Yes, some may call us just a tad crazy, but you know what, we love it,” Marais told his Run Walk for Life colleagues.”We aced another challenging goal. Thank you everyone. You are all so very inspirational. You are all champions.”

The second challenge the group did since then was called the add-it-on challenge. This included running six days in a row with each day the run being a little longer than the previous day.

Marais explained that for instance, one could decide to start with a 50-minute run and each day add another 10 minutes, so by the final day they would have run 100 minutes. As a group, the Run Walk for Life branch ran for 4 821 minutes (80 and a half hours) while covering a distance of 467.45km with an average pace of 10 minutes, 18 seconds per km.
