Many Dorfman Karate competitors eligible to represent SA this year

JOBURG – Local karate group reflects on their highlights of the year gone by.

The Dorfman Karate Group comprising the Malcolm Dorfman Parktown North Dojo and the Shane Dorfman Norwood/Melrose Dojo reflected on a successful 2018.

Last year, the group focused on the national championship and trained hard in preparation for the WSKA World Championship this year.

Malcolm travelled abroad a number of times last year, conducting regular international Bujutsu Karate seminars in countries including Germany, England, Scotland and the United States. Malcolm was also given the unique opportunity to instruct black belt classes at the KWF World Headquarters in Tokyo.

During the same period in Tokyo, Shane was personally trained one-on-one with the world’s greatest Bujutsu Katate master, grandmaster Mikio Yahara. Malcolm held a number of discussions with Yahara in his capacity as KWF deputy grandmaster. Together they agreed on conducting a two-day seminar in South Africa in March this year to be hosted by the Dorfman Karate Group, creating yet another feather in the cap of Dorfman Karate.

Shane was appointed the director and head of martial arts training at Kids Kicking Cancer South Africa. This global organisation has a presence in 59 healthcare institutions across the world and uses a combination of martial arts, breathing techniques and meditation to reduce the pain and anxiety of children with a variety of illnesses. The programme seeks to empower and uplift children, giving them a sense of power, peace and purpose. Other Dorfman Karate members are also assisting with this humanitarian project.

Many Dorfman Karate competitors will be eligible to represent the country at the two world championships this year following their successful results last year. Dorfman Karate won the most gold medals and titles in the KWF SA Adult National Championship and the KWF SA Children’s National Championships.
