Anyone for beach tennis?

SANDTON – Tennis meets the beach in the heart of Sandton.

Tennis South Africa (TSA) has announced a new partnership to grow the sport of beach tennis in the country.

The three-year partnership between TSA and Kia Motors includes a series of international events between 8 and 21 December.

The Kia Summer Slam Beach Tennis Tour forms part of the ITF Beach Tennis Tour.

The announcement was made at the Sandton Sports Club in Parkmore and was supported by athletes such as Erin Burger and Lenize Potgieter of SA Netball, Wihan Lubbe and Aaron Phangiso of the bizhub Highveld Lions as well as Grant Thomson and Wandile Makwetu of Multiply Titans.

There will be four events across two weeks and a total prize money in excess of $35 000 (about R509 000)

TSA CEO, Richard Glover said they were delighted to see Kia Motors extend their support of local tennis with this exciting new three-year partnership.

“Beach tennis is a fun and simplified version of tennis and offers a great entry point into our sport for first time players,” he said. “Indeed, we see the format as being a powerful tool for tennis development.”

In addition, the new partnership will also see beach tennis courts being built at TSA Growthpoint development centres in Soweto, Atteridgeville, eThekwini and Cape Town.

David Sieff, marketing director for Kia Motors South Africa said, “Kia Motors has a longstanding association with tennis globally through the Australian Open, but also locally through our association with Team South Africa and Davis Cup.”

He continued that is a fun and fresh format that is open to everyone, regardless of their experience or skills.
