Ready, set, bake at St Stithians to honour Youth Day

LYME PARK –The concept was simple, R50 entry into the fundraiser went toward the St Stithians Endowment Fund.

The St Stithian’s family put their own spin to honour Youth Day (16 June) this year.

The community came together, in their respective kitchens, to bake for a good cause in the Great Saints Bake-Off. According to the school’s fundraising manager Julia Phipps, the bake-off came as an idea to include everyone in a fundraiser for the school, all while giving back to the community.

“I was seeing so many social media posts of what people were baking at home and I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be great if we could get some of this baking to those who are less fortunate, and benefit St Stithians at the same time?'” she said.

As the school was already collecting essential items for the Johannesburg Organisation of Services to the Homeless (Josh), Phipps saw a great opportunity. “The concept was simple, R50 entry into the fundraiser went toward the St Stithians Endowment Fund. This fund is used to support the school in times of need, assist bursary students and capital projects. Then, bake your creation, and donate it to Josh if you want to, along with a note of inspiration.”

The Saints community came out in their numbers to support the initiative. The baked goodies were dropped off at the school and Josh was able to collect a bakkie-full of muffins, biscuits, cakes, loaves of bread and hundreds more scrumptious baked goods by 4pm.

Everything was later distributed to a number of shelters in the area. “These are the values of our school and we are so proud of how our students demonstrated that they care,” Phipps concluded.
