Covid-19 Lockdown Day one: Sandton at night in photos

SANDTON – It's day one of the lockdown and Friday night, Sandton City vibes were sombre.

It’s Friday night and you’re in bed on lockdown. Fortunately for you, the Sandton Chronicle was out on the streets to bring you an update.

Lockdown night one 27 March and of course the streets are bare. Leaving the house wouldn’t be fair.

Sandton City is the entertainment hub of the north and tonight it was anything but entertaining from popular nightclubs with empty parking lots to empty street corners.

The Chronicle’s journalist Aneesa Adams scouted the area to bring you an update.

The heart of Sandton, Nelson Mandela Square with all the delicious restaurants and the amazing atmosphere is truly missed by its dwellers. And, just as it should be to respect the rules of the Covid-19 lockdown in South Africa.

Sandton socialite Aqeeda Domingo thinks about what she would have been doing this Friday night.

“It’s payday weekend I would be out with my friends, out with my girls going for dinner and a movie. Chilling in Sandton and just living.” She said that Sandton is her go-to place from the restaurants to the shopping. A shopaholic she said that not even online shopping will fill the hole.

“Sandton is like a world on its own. The lights and luxury are what brings me back. It’s sad to see the streets empty,”

Her lockdown plans will be to chill and catch up on some series.

The Sandton Convention Centre which is always buzzing has an eerily feeling when there is absolutely no one around.

However, it’s quite a beautiful thing to see Sandton City at night without the clutter. A pristine city with brilliant architecture and fine art. It’s no wonder it’s the city of dreams.

As always, no matter how much you miss the nightlife of Sandton, stay home, stay safe and follow the rules of law.
