San Sareno Knitting Club knits for a good cause

MILL HILL – The San Sareno Knitting Club donates winter items to charity.

The San Sereno Knitting Club had their annual display of the items they have crocheted and knitted in the past year. The display was held at the San Sereno Retirement Village lounge on 6 May before they were donated to charity.

The club has been in existence for 24 years and it now consists of 26 knitters. Former leader of the knitting club Louise Muirhead said, “[The first] club was very small and then it grew bigger and bigger.”

She had been in the position for 14 years and was succeeded by Rosemarie Andrew earlier this year. “The annual display takes place every May and we donate all the items we have done for the year to three charities,” Muirhead added. The charities are CHOC, Mammoritithando Daycare and Thusanang Care Centre.

The knitters meet every Monday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm over biscuits and tea and knit or crochet whatever item they feel like creating that afternoon. The eldest member of the club is Doreen Read (105). “I have been crocheting since I can remember, I love every moment of it,” she said.

Two other members of the club, Vivien Wendhold and Marge Fraser, are happy to be part of the club and admitted that they loved it dearly. Wendhold said, “My grandfather taught me how to knit. I have always enjoyed it.”

Fraser added, “We start knitting again for the year, next Monday. I can’t wait.”
