Community spirit in rugby tournament

SANDTON – The Bryanston Honey badgers recently hosted their first tournament at the Bryanston High School.

The first Bryanston Honey Badgers club rugby tournament was held at Bryanston High School.

The Honey Badgers is a new sports club offering rugby as its primary sport.

Chairperson of the club Anthony Losco said as an affiliate of the Golden Lions Youth League, the club is given the opportunity to host other clubs for Saturday matches.

“We support the schools in the area, and we teach the children how to play the game and get the core skills, enjoy the game and learn the principals of the game. The most important thing is to prepare them for when they enter the high school environment.

“My reason for starting this is to avoid injuries because with proper coaching you can prevent injuries.”

Four clubs competed in the tournament – the hosts, Roodepoort, Khosa and the Stingers – with players from U7 up until U13.

Losco added that the Saturday games were played for the love of the game and there were no official winners. The main purpose was to prepare the players for school rugby and club trials. “If selected at the trials then the players get to play for their province in KwaZulu-Natal.
