We asked Sandton residents for their opinions on unruly sports fans

A recent match between Kaizer Chiefs and the Free State Stars ended in violence when fans took to the field to destroy equipment and assault a security guard.

We asked residents what punishment they think there should be to prevent future incidents of this nature and whether or not the team should be punished for their fans’ actions.

Here’s what they had to say:

KARINA SENEKAL: I don’t think it would be fair for the team to get punished for what the fans do. The individuals should be punished for what they did.
QUINTIN VAN ZYL: I don’t think you can control the crowds; at best I think they could patrol the crowds but I don’t think the team should be punished for the fans’ behaviour.
MUNTASHE CHIYANGWA: I feel that if the team were banned for a couple of games it would send a message. I don’t think it would be the fairest solution but maybe the best.
TUMI KHUMALO: I don’t think a team can be responsible for the fans’ behaviour. So even if the team were punished, I don’t think it would stop it.
