GALLERY: Purple Walk in Sandton a big success

The main aim of the walk is to create awareness for epilepsy and is also a toiletry drive for those with the condition.

The third annual Purple Walk for World Purple Day in support of epilepsy took place at Mushroom Park in Sandton and was attended by hundreds of people with most dressed in purple to support the cause.

The main aim of the walk is to create awareness for epilepsy and is also a toiletry drive for those with the condition.

Tania van Heerden and her son Max who is a Purple Day Youth Ambassador organised the walk in aid of several homes. Max is also a Scout and Scouts from across the region came out in numbers to show their support on the day.

Some of the homes they support are the Tshimollo Children’s Home in Kaalfontein, Bathabeleng Children’s Home in Ivory Park, Reea Epilepsy Care Centre in Craighall Park and Epilepsy SA in Geduld.

Tania said the event was a big success. “It took about four months to organise the event and I never expected that kind of turnout. Every year it just keeps growing.

“While setting up I did not know what kind of turnout to expect, and all of a sudden there was a mass of purple.”

She said it was overwhelming to see the number of people that went to so much effort, some had their own shirts specially made to come and support the event.
