Bryanston High School celebrates its 50th anniversary

BRYANSTON – Bryanston High School celebrated their 50th anniversary alongside several past head girls and boys on 26 January.

Past head girls and head boys, friends of the school and schoolchildren gathered to celebrate Bryanston High School‘s 50th milestone on 26 January.

The ceremony began by singing the school hymn followed by a talk by Val Richards, Bryanston High School’s first head girl.

Richards, who was the head girl in 1968, said the school was not as well-established and steeped in tradition 50 years ago. “The school began with a struggling start because of a critical shortage of teachers,” said Richards.

She encouraged the current schoolchildren to share their talents and play their part in rescuing the earth’s natural resources, which were not of critical concern in 1968. She compared the school with an orchestra, where each player has a vital role to maintain harmony.

“Find courage, be brave, let your voice be heard and shine.”

Towards the end of the ceremony, the school sang Happy Birthday and let off balloons to the applause of the crowd.

Principal John Skelton proceeded to cut the blue cake and schoolchildren were given cupcakes to enjoy in the sun.
