Bryanston High School – Proud for last 51 Years

In January of 1968, the first group of Grade 8 learners were welcomed to the brand-new Bryanston High School which stood proud in the veld of Bryanston.

A metal cow grid had to be crossed to get onto the school property and to stop the cattle from the neighbouring farm from coming into the school and grazing on the fields.

The school was not ready when the first learners arrived and building rubble, tractors and labourers were still everywhere while lessons were in progress. Joel Alswang had been appointed as the founder headmaster and, together with a small staff, helped grow the school each year by one grade until 1972 when the first group of Grade 12 learners matriculated.

Alswang’s astute business acumen together with a few of the founding parents enabled the school to raise loans enough to build a swimming pool, get the many sports fields built and established as well as six all-weather tennis courts and four netball courts.

Quickly under Alswang’s leadership, Bryanston High School established a great reputation for its excellent facilities and outstanding education, something which was to grow the school to its maximum numbers in the seventies when there were only a few other high schools in the area.

In 2018, the school marked its 50th birthday with a number of celebrations hosted at the school. The royal blue blazer and hoepoe badge have become an emblem of quality which distinguishes Bryanston High School from the rest.
