Help at hand for panic attack sufferers

SANDTON - Free expert talks on panic and anxiety attacks will be held on 15 July.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) is supporting Mental Health Awareness Month by creating awareness about panic and anxiety attacks.

Panic Awareness Day is on 10 July and Sadag will be holding free panic and anxiety community talks with experts in Sandton, Soweto, Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town during that week. This is a way for people who cannot easily access help due to costs or therapists not nearby, to get free advice and it gives them the opportunity to start taking steps to better mental health.

The Sandton support group will be having a free talk with a guest speaker at 6pm at the Rosebank Union Church in Hurlington, Sandton.

Panic attack symptoms vary, but can include the need to ‘escape’, heart palpitations, light-headedness, dizziness, sweating, wet palms, trembling, shortness of breath, fear of losing control or dying, fear of driving, eating in restaurants or getting into elevators.

However, many symptoms are similar to real medical emergencies, and a basic doctor’s check-up is always advised.
