A local music line-up to steal the limelight

JOBURG - A host of international artists lined up for Tshwane's TribeOne Dinokeng music festival need to ensure their performances will be on point.

Some of the best rock bands produced by South Africa will take to the festival’s Thunder Valley Main Stage in September, joining a line-up that includes international and local urban superstars.

The local artist line-up for the festival reads like a modern South African Rock ‘n Roll hall of fame, and includes the likes of Fokofpolisiekar, Shadowclub, Gangs of Ballet, and Zebra & Giraffe.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Caroline Hillary said that the local rock line-up will also feature The Black Cat Bones, Van Coke Kartel, Taxi Violence, Wrestlerish, and Al Bairre.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Nicki Minaj, J Cole, Kid Ink, D’banj, Wizkid, Fally Ipupa, Sarkodie, Khuli Chana, Keko, AKA, Redsan, Alikiba and Xtatic will also perform at the festival.

“The Thunder Valley Main Stage is one of the [festival’s] main stages and, musically, has a focus on rock, pop, alternative and related music genres,” said Hillary.

“The producers are planning a mind-blowing line-up… to fill all three days on this stage, and will announce new acts on a weekly basis.”

The festival will take place from 26 until 28 September in the city of Tshwane, and will feature three mega stages and 62 live stages in various locations around the city.

A closer look at the local rock line-up:

Fokofpolisiekar: Known for their raw on-stage energy and controversial lyrics, Fokofpolisiekar is made up of Francois van Coke on lead vocals, Hunter Kennedy on guitar, Johnny de Ridder on lead guitar, Wynand Myburgh on bass, and Jaco Snakehead Venter on drums.

Gangs of Ballet: The five-times SAMA nominated, MTV MAMA Award-winning, Durban-based band have defied genre categorisation with an eclectic mix of alternative, melodic, anthemic, electronic and dance music.

Zebra & Giraffe: In the six years since Zebra & Giraffe played their first show at 2008’s Oppikoppi festival, the band have gone on to headline all of South Africa’s major festivals, and have played alongside The Killers, Snow Patrol, Oasis, Sum41, The Prodigy, and Panic! At the Disco.

The Black Cat Bones: A band whose sound is a fusion of traditional, blues, rock, folk and country music, Black Cat Bones could be described as modern-day storytellers who represent life through music in its most honest form.

Van Coke Kartel: Made up of Jedd Kossew on lead guitar and vocals, Dylan Hunt on drums, Francois van Coke on vocals and guitar, and Wynand Myburgh on bass, Van Coke Kartel made a name for themselves with their no-nonsense rock ‘n roll shows.

Shadowclub: Rootsy, bluesy rock ‘n rollers Shadowclub are all about powerful songs performed with passion. The band comprises Jacques Moolman on vocals and guitar, Isaac Klawansky on drums, and Louis Roux on bass.

Taxi Violence: Since their inception, Taxi Violence have rocked every venue of significance and have headlined major festivals in South Africa. This rock band’s sound can be described as blues-infused retro rock with a pinch of sleaze and bourbon.

Wrestlerish: This Gauteng-based, Loerie Award-winning band are also triple SAMA, triple MK Award and Pendoring Award nominees, and have released three acclaimed albums. The TribeOne festival will be the band’s final performance.

Al Bairre: This Cape Town-based, five-piece symphonic indie rock band combine cello, violin, guitar, ukelele and drums, making for a unique offering on the South African soundscape.
