The Armstrong Lie

SANDTON - The Armstrong Lie is a documentary that narrates former cyclist Lance Armstrong's rise and fall from grace.

Ster-Kinekor premiered the documentary about the sports legend at their head offices in Sandton on 11 June.

The director of the documentary, Alex Gibney had a clear intention from the beginning of the documentary: to tell the truth about one of the world’s best-kept open secrets.

Gibney chronicles how the sports star managed to cheat through doping to win his seven Tour de France titles. The director not only shows the power of Armstrong as the liar, but he also shows how others helped Armstrong continue with his lie.

His struggle and win over cancer as well as the accolades he obtained as a cyclist inspired many. He became an iconic symbol to cancer patients and the world. Gibney shows how people wanted so badly to believe in his lie that they refused to see the truth, which was right in front of their eyes all along.

The documentary is not an emotive account of Armstrong’s cheating; instead the documentary gives a factual account of what led to the truth finally coming out.

The documentary is set to be released in South African cinemas soon.
